Chosen For God’s Service

Chosen For God’s Service

Exodus 6:14  These be the heads of their fathers’ houses: The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel; Hanoch, and Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi: these be the families of Reuben.
15  And the sons of Simeon; Jemuel, and Jamin, and Ohad, and Jachin, and Zohar, and Shaul the son of a Canaanitish woman: these are the families of Simeon.
16  And these are the names of the sons of Levi according to their generations; Gershon, and Kohath, and Merari: and the years of the life of Levi were an hundred thirty and seven years.
17  The sons of Gershon; Libni, and Shimi, according to their families.
18  And the sons of Kohath; Amram, and Izhar, and Hebron, and Uzziel: and the years of the life of Kohath were an hundred thirty and three years.
19  And the sons of Merari; Mahali and Mushi: these are the families of Levi according to their generations.
20  And Amram took him Jochebed his father’s sister to wife; and she bare him Aaron and Moses: and the years of the life of Amram were an hundred and thirty and seven years.
21  And the sons of Izhar; Korah, and Nepheg, and Zichri.
22  And the sons of Uzziel; Mishael, and Elzaphan, and Zithri.
23  And Aaron took him Elisheba, daughter of Amminadab, sister of Naashon, to wife; and she bare him Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
24  And the sons of Korah; Assir, and Elkanah, and Abiasaph: these are the families of the Korhites.
25  And Eleazar Aaron’s son took him one of the daughters of Putiel to wife; and she bare him Phinehas: these are the heads of the fathers of the Levites according to their families.
26  These are that Aaron and Moses, to whom the LORD said, Bring out the children of Israel from the land of Egypt according to their armies.
27  These are they which spake to Pharaoh king of Egypt, to bring out the children of Israel from Egypt: these are that Moses and Aaron.
28  And it came to pass on the day when the LORD spake unto Moses in the land of Egypt,
29  That the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, I am the LORD: speak thou unto Pharaoh king of Egypt all that I say unto thee.
30  And Moses said before the LORD, Behold, I am of uncircumcised lips, and how shall Pharaoh hearken unto me?

History is important. History tells a story of life. It is a shame when a society tries to erase or rewrite its history. It is a shame when a family tries to erase or rewrite its history. There are parts of history that can be painful to recall. There are parts that we might want to forget and rewrite. However, sometimes we need the school of hard knocks to get us to pay attention to what is truly important.
We have already noted that the Pharaohs were not interested in history. They never bothered to check out how things came about and the significance of different events in their past. Because of that, they did not know how to govern the land they were given. The Pharaoh that Moses was going to be dealing with, would be known as the king who spoiled the land of Egypt and encouraged his people to lose their firstborn sons and their firstborn cattle. He was the Pharaoh who would be known for leading his armies into the Red Sea so they could drown fighting a battle they could never win. Rather than submitting to the true God, they lost their lives fighting the truth. What a sad ending.
In our text, God rehearsed some of the history of the nation of Israel. Israel is the key nation of the world. God chose Abraham and Sarah and He promised to make a great nation out of Abraham. He promised that all the nations of the world would be blessed through Abraham. We know this to be true because the Lord Jesus Christ came in the flesh through the seed of Abraham. The Lord Jesus Christ is truly a blessing to all nations. Without His coming in the flesh and laying down His life for mankind, no one could ever be saved.
In verses 14-25 God gave a brief genealogical record of some of the children of Israel. It is not an exhaustive record. It covers the firstborn of Israel, named Reuben. He was the eldest son of Jacob, whose name God changed to Israel. That name, Israel, is a constant reminder that the children of Israel were intended to be the people of God. Through that nation, God intended to show the entire world of His greatness, His love, His mercy, etc. Israel chose to reject their privileged place in the world. John 3:16 reminds us:

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Jesus Christ came unto His own and His own received Him not, but as many as received Him to them gave He the power to be called the sons of God.

John 1:12  But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
13  Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

If you are reading this, but you are not presently one of the called, why not stop right now and turn to God in repentance and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as your own personal Saviour and Lord. You will never regret that choice.
God chose a few names that He had written down in our text. He chose those names, not because they were the greatest people in the nation of Israel. He chose them to remind us all that God takes less than perfect people and He works in them and through them for His glory. God never whitewashes sin. He never whitewashes failure, but He shows that when a lost sinner becomes broken before Him, He can do a mighty work through that person. He also shows us that even if a lost person does not become broken before Him, He will still be glorified even though that lost person will miss out on the blessings of the Lord.
In verse 26, God reminds us that Aaron and Moses were chosen by the LORD to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt. It is interesting to note that God classified the children of Israel as armies. They were an army, but not equipped with swords and spears. They were an army that God would lead. He would fight their battles. All they needed to do was trust in Him. They were slow learners. Many of them never learned to trust in the LORD. They saw His mighty hand at work, but they never surrendered to that mighty hand.
In verses 27-30 God reminds us of the kind of people Moses and Aaron were. His main focus was on Moses. Moses was a man of God, but he had his shortcomings. He had things to learn. He had his heart in the right place, but his heart needed to be moulded and changed by God. Verse 30 reminds us that Moses argued with God about His calling of him. Moses looked at himself and his inadequacies. God was showing Him Who He was and how He was able to do what Moses could never do for himself, let alone for the nation of Israel.
It is important for us to realize that we are nothing without the LORD. However, when God changes the heart of an individual and then that individual argues with God’s ability to perfect in that person what He wants done, that is not wise. God demonstrated His longsuffering in Moses. He demonstrated His mercy and love. He knew the heart of Moses. He also knew the heart of Aaron. He knew those two men were different than Pharaoh. He would work in those two men and He would reveal His greatness to the Pharaoh, and the Egyptians and the children of Israel. Many of the Egyptians suffered greatly due to their rejection of the LORD. Many Hebrews also suffered greatly because they rejected the LORD.
The LORD continued to reveal His plan and He also worked His plan out. It would take some time, but the children of Israel would leave Egypt at just the right time; not a minute too late, or too early.
God does all things well. It is important to know Him and to submit to His leadership.

Philippians 1:6  Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

That verse was given to me at my ordination ceremony. God started a good work in me. He saved me. He is still working in me to bring me to be what He designed me to be. It is important for me to yield to Him and glorify Him through submission to His will. That is important for every true child of God. It is important for each person to be careful not to miss out on the blessings that God wants to bless you with.
