Psalm 19:10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.
In our Friday night Bible Study we have been looking at the matter of money. God directed Paul to write that money is not the problem, but rather that the love of money is the problem. The love of money will cause a person to get himself into all kinds of trouble.
In our text we see that God’s Word is to be desired more than gold. Most people certainly do not believe that. Most people do not bother to attend a good church. They will take a job that causes them to work on the Lord’s day even if it is not essential work. They would rather go shopping or do something else rather than go to church. They do not see the value of God’s Word. They do not see the need of salvation and thus why would they go to church? Many have the mindset that Jesus dealt with in John 8.
John 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
33 They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
Jesus’ answer to these Jews was not what they wanted to hear. He did not flatter them. He did not pamper them. He told them the truth because He knew the truth is what they needed to hear. He declared that the truth shall make you free.
God’s Word is truth. As we have noted in the past few verses, there is nothing lacking in God’s Word. There is nothing that needs to be changed in God’s Word.
The Psalmist stated that God’s Word is more to be desired than fine gold. Fine gold is highly refined gold. In the book of the Revelation of the Lord Jesus Christ, we are told that the streets of New Jerusalem are paved with gold that is transparent as glass. There is no gold that is that refined on this earth. That gold is pure. The only ones who will ever get to see that gold are those who see the value of God’s Word now.
God’s Word reveals man’s need for a Saviour. God’s Word reveals Who the Saviour is. God’s Word shows us how to be saved. God’s Word shows us the blessings of salvation. God’s Word shows us how to grow once we are saved. God’s Word gives many warnings both to the lost and to the saved. The lost need to be warned of the danger of remaining lost. The saved need to be warned against walking in the flesh. God’s word is very important for mankind. Sadly, many never accept that fact.
It is important to note that God’s Word does not lose Its’ value just because people reject it. It is man that loses when he rejects God’s Word.
God commands His children to be witnesses unto the Lord Jesus Christ. God also commands His children not to be stumblingblocks to the lost. God also reminds us in His Word that the lost will not be able to blame anyone else for their failure to be saved because they could turn to God’s Word and be saved. It is interesting to listen to lost people talk about what they find wrong with God’s Word or with a true church. The wise person submits to God’s Word and joins a true church and seeks to glorify God in his own heart and life and thus will be a blessing to God and to a true church.
God’s Word is precious and it is more to be desired than fine gold to those who let God open their eyes to the truth.
The Psalmist also tells us that the Word of the LORD is sweeter than honey and the honeycomb. I have mentioned it before, but I can still remember when my Dad gave me a piece of a honeycomb. I do not remember all the details surrounding that event anymore, but I can still remember the taste of that honeycomb. It was so good. I like honey. It is a natural sweetener and it has many good qualities in it.
The Psalmist tells us that God’s Word is better than honey. It is sweeter than honey and the honeycomb. It is not only life giving, but it rejoices the heart of the person who takes heed to it. It is something the child of God will come back to time and time again. Every once in a while I like to take a teaspoon and just take a little honey from our honey container. It tastes good. I do not like to do that too often, but once in a while.
However, with God’s Word, I have learned that there is so much good there that I spend time in it every day. I will never know it all no matter how long I live. God has shown me many blessings through His Word. I wish I would have been much wiser as a young person and seen the value of God’s Word then. I missed out on so much by delaying getting saved until I was 20. Then I was involved in New Evangelical churches for a number of years and so I did not grow like I could have. It was such a great blessing to my heart when I got into a church that helped me to grow as I needed to. It was not that I had no more problems then. In fact there were some problems that developed that I did not have before. However, that was not God’s fault. Those who do not love the Lord will resist His Word. They do not see the sweetness of His Word.
Personally, I would never want to go back to where I was before. I am thankful for the many opportunities for growth that God has shown me through His Word.
It is my prayer that many others will come to see the value of God’s Word in these last days. Rather than pursue gold and be governed by materialism, how much better to know the Lord and be governed by His Word. There are circumstances we face in life that we cannot control. There are limitations we face that we cannot control. However, if we come to know the Lord and let Him show us just how precious His Word is, that will give us a contentment that all the gold in the world could never give us. It will give us a sweetness in our hearts that all the honey in the world could never give us. God wants to bless us with great blessings. There is no such a thing as running out of blessings when you know the Lord and follow Him.
In this life, there are things that get old. A person can lose interest in certain things. However, the true child of God will never lose interest in God’s Word.
We have noted from Hebrews 10 that we should not forsake the assembling of ourselves together as the manner of some is. Those who grow tired of God’s truth demonstrate a problem in their hearts. Those who would rather skip church and go do something else demonstrate a problem in their hearts.
Today is the Lord’s Day. It is another opportunity that you have to get into God’s Word in His house and be blessed in doing so. If you listen to God right now and follow Him to a good local church, He has a blessing awaiting you there. If you take the time to listen to the messages preached in that good local church you will be able to receive His blessing today. Don’t short change yourself. Get all that God wants to give you today. Follow Him and be blessed.
