Esther 7:7 And the king arising from the banquet of wine in his wrath went into the palace garden: and Haman stood up to make request for his life to Esther the queen; for he saw that there was evil determined against him by the king.
8 Then the king returned out of the palace garden into the place of the banquet of wine; and Haman was fallen upon the bed whereon Esther was. Then said the king, Will he force the queen also before me in the house? As the word went out of the king’s mouth, they covered Haman’s face.
9 And Harbonah, one of the chamberlains, said before the king, Behold also, the gallows fifty cubits high, which Haman had made for Mordecai, who had spoken good for the king, standeth in the house of Haman. Then the king said, Hang him thereon.
10 So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king’s wrath pacified.
The truth is liberating. Esther finally got around to telling the truth. She had used deception to get to where she was. She had tried to hide who she was, but God was not going to allow that to stand. Haman was a wicked man but God used him to flush out His people. Haman began to understand what fear was about when Esther told the king what he had done.
In verse 7 we see that the king was quite upset with what he had just heard. He had been lied to and he had been tricked into giving permission to use his office to try to destroy a people that were not worthy of destruction. The king needed to take a moment to think about what he had just heard. This was a huge hit to his pride.
In the meantime, Haman tried to gain some mercy from a Jew, the people he hated. He put himself in a very unwise position by falling upon the bed that Esther was sitting on. The king came back into the banquet room and saw what Haman was doing, and in his rage, he assumed that Haman was trying to go after his wife.
King Ahasuerus had enough of Haman’s ventures. His men that were in the banquet hall now stepped into action. They covered Haman’s face and took him away from Esther. Harbonah, one of the the king’s chamberlains, knew of the gallows that Haman built to hang Mordecai on. The king did not seem to be aware of this yet. Harbonah knew the height of the gallows and he knew where they were. The king, in his fury, commanded that Haman be hanged on those very gallows.
As we noted earlier, Haman’s wife had more sense than he had. She was a lost woman as well, but she could see that Haman’s plot was backfiring drastically.
There was no trial set up for Haman. The king’s word was enough to have him taken out and hanged on those gallows that very night. This act calmed down the king. Things would change drastically in the kingdom now that this wicked man was out of the way.
We have noted before that God is in charge. He did not approve of the drunkenness of the king. He did not approve of the adultery of the king either. He did not approve of Mordecai and Esther’s actions either. He will work even when those who should be glorifying Him choose to hide away from Him.
The Bible tells us that God will reward those who know Him and serve Him. There was no person to reward here. God always deserves all the glory. He will receive all the glory as well. He is gracious and blesses those who walk in the fear of the LORD.
The book of Esther reminds us that we can and must trust God if we want to know His blessing. We can help others to know His peace as well, if we know Him and serve Him faithfully. There is no benefit to being ashamed of the true God. Esther would never have been involved in the mess she was in if she would have known the true God and served Him faithfully. Mordecai would not bow to Haman but he did not live in the fear of the LORD. God could not bless him for his actions. God made a promise to Abraham and He is faithful to Himself. He cannot lie. The wise person submits to Him and is thus a recipient of His blessings. The fool defies God and misses out on what his soul desires, but cannot have due to his rebellion.
There would be some tense times ahead for the Jews yet in this book. There would be the slaughter of many Gentiles, due to their paganism. The king had allowed antisemitism to be fuelled through wicked Haman. This could not continue on. God promised Abraham that He would curse those that curse Abraham’s seed — Israel. The king would be spared at this time, but many of his citizens would lose their lives due to his foolishness.
A fear of God would be instilled in the survivors’ lives. They did not turn to God in repentance, but they came to understand that you cannot get away with defying the true God. Knowledge is important. The Bible warns of wilful ignorance. It is important to take the time to pursue truth. Truth is readily available in God’s Word. God’s Word is truth. The wise person listens to God’s working through his conscience and finds a true Bible and a true church to help him to see his need to be born again. That is the way of blessing.
