I Corinthians 2:11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.
16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.
When Jesus Christ came to this earth, He did not do away with Old Testament law. He came to correct the gross corruption of that law. The Pharisees and their friends had been quite active in corrupting the Word of God. John the Baptist was sent by God prior to the coming of Jesus Christ. He was sent to prepare the way for Jesus Christ. John the Baptist was a plain living and a plain speaking man. The Pharisees tried to get on his good side. They could see that he was a threat to their cushy lifestyle. They loved power and they loved the praise of men.
John the Baptist lost his life because he was obedient to God and as such he confronted the Roman King — Herod, regarding his adulterous relationship with his brother’s wife. Herod had been influenced by the Pharisees and he wanted to kill John but he feared the people. Politicians are power hungry people. Even in a dictatorship like the Roman Empire, they want to be liked. They do not want to be using the power of the sword all the time. King Herod’s adulterous wife eventually found a way to have John murdered. She even enlisted the help of her daughter.
Jesus Christ was not afraid of the people. He spoke the truth and He also demonstrated that He was the Messiah that was prophesied in the Old Testament. The Pharisees tried to get on His good side as well. They saw Jesus as a greater threat than John the Baptist. Like John the Baptist, Jesus did not cater to the Pharisees. He exposed them for their false teaching and their hypocrisy. The more He taught the truth, the more the Pharisees hated Him. They assumed that they could kill Him and that would be the last of their opposition. They rejected the fact that He was the Messiah. Blind people cannot see. The Pharisees were spiritually blind and refused the see the Truth.
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Jesus pointed out the problem facing man.
Matthew 7:12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.
13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
All of humanity starts on the broad way. Man needs to choose to enter the narrow way. New Evangelicalism is a key figure on the broad way. Even lost people want to believe they are going the right way. The Pharisees put themselves out there as followers of God. They had convinced themselves that they were right. They corrupted the Scriptures to try to prove their legitimacy. It is interesting to observe how many people today are still following the corrupt philosophies of the Pharisees. That is because they are on the broad way.
The narrow way is not corrupted. It is pure and right. It is true that every saved person is flawed. No man is perfect. Every saved person is on the narrow way, but that does not mean we are perfect. The good news is that the narrow way is pure. The imperfections of the saved cannot corrupt the narrow way. As true Christians walk on that narrow way, the Truth is there to remind them of what is required. Those who are truly born again are not offended by the Truth. They will offer some resistance at times, but the Bible also tells us that God chastens those that are His children.
As we continue our study of the book of Exodus, we are seeing God’s perfect law laid down. Jesus confirmed that perfect law while He was on this earth. He chose twelve men to finish the declaration of that perfect law. The Bible calls that law “the perfect law of liberty”.
The devil wants man to believe that there is no such a thing as a perfect law. He also wants man to believe that strict following of any law is not liberty, unless of course it is their own law that must be followed. It is not natural to love God. It is not natural to receive His Word. That is why God’s salvation is essential. God changes the heart and mind of the born again Christian to be able to receive His Truth.
