Exodus 27:9 And thou shalt make the court of the tabernacle: for the south side southward there shall be hangings for the court of fine twined linen of an hundred cubits long for one side:
10 And the twenty pillars thereof and their twenty sockets shall be of brass; the hooks of the pillars and their fillets shall be of silver.
11 And likewise for the north side in length there shall be hangings of an hundred cubits long, and his twenty pillars and their twenty sockets of brass; the hooks of the pillars and their fillets of silver.
12 And for the breadth of the court on the west side shall be hangings of fifty cubits: their pillars ten, and their sockets ten.
13 And the breadth of the court on the east side eastward shall be fifty cubits.
14 The hangings of one side of the gate shall be fifteen cubits: their pillars three, and their sockets three.
15 And on the other side shall be hangings fifteen cubits: their pillars three, and their sockets three.
16 And for the gate of the court shall be an hanging of twenty cubits, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen, wrought with needlework: and their pillars shall be four, and their sockets four.
17 All the pillars round about the court shall be filleted with silver; their hooks shall be of silver, and their sockets of brass.
18 The length of the court shall be an hundred cubits, and the breadth fifty every where, and the height five cubits of fine twined linen, and their sockets of brass.
19 All the vessels of the tabernacle in all the service thereof, and all the pins thereof, and all the pins of the court, shall be of brass.
There are people who read for entertainment. Some like romance novels and others like western novels. Some like to read history and others read biographies. Different people have different interests.
The Bible is not written to entertain. It is written to help us to know who we are and who we need to be. Paul wrote:
II Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
Paul also wrote:
Romans 15:4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
God’s Word is not meant for entertainment. Certain parts may interest some and other parts are avoided because the natural man finds no interest in them. The saved person should take an interest in all of Scripture. We need to understand it properly and as Paul wrote, we need to learn from the past and build truth into our lives if we are saved.
As we continue our study of the book of Exodus, we have spent a fair amount of time looking briefly at the instructions for the Tabernacle and its interior parts. As we have mentioned, all of this was a picture of what would be found in One “person”, the Lord Jesus Christ. He is more than just a person. He is the Son of God and the Son of Man. As we study and meditate on Scripture, we learn more about Him and how important it is to have a right understanding of Who Jesus Christ truly is.
In today’s text we are looking at the court of the tabernacle. The court was outside of the Tabernacle proper. It was the place where the people could come and gather. They could come and be taught and observe the preparations that needed to take place for the atoning of their sins. This area was also marked off by curtains. There were hangings made of fine twined linen. The dimensions were 150 feet by 75 feet. Even though this area was outside the Tabernacle proper, it was still to be made in a such a way as to remind the people this was a special place where they could meet with God. There were twenty pillars with twenty sockets. These were made of brass.
We have already noted that the brass was a metal made by melting certain metals together. They must have had equipment to be able to heat these metals and also a place to cool them for use. God supplied the wisdom needed to make all that was needed for this special place. The hooks for the pillars and their fillets were of silver. The fillets were rods that were used to connect the pillars.
Again the details are given regarding the curtains and the structure designed to hang the curtains.
As we have noted before, this structure was different from any of the tents the people lived in. God made sure that His house would be easily recognizable by those coming near it. If any other nations were observing what was going on among the Jews, they too would have seen that this was a special structure.
This outer court is typology for the fact that much of Jesus’ earthly ministry was done outside of the Temple. He rubbed shoulders with many people. The Pharisees were constantly either attacking Him or trying to figure out how to attack Him. Jesus subjected Himself to physical, mental, and spiritual abuse. He never broke under the pressure. He was strong and proved His deity over and over again.
In verse 16 we read of the details of the gate to this court as well. Everything was detailed and particular. Jesus Christ is the door to the sheep fold. No man can enter into that fold except through Jesus Christ.
In verse 18 we are given the dimensions again including the height. The height of this area was 7.5 feet. In verse 19 we read further of the vessels of the tabernacle that were for the service at the altar. These were all of brass as were the pins for the court. This part was different and distinct from the Tabernacle itself. Each part was important but distinct.
God was giving pictures to the nation of Israel. The priests would be there to teach the truth. The “pictures” were not left to private interpretation. There was much teaching done as well. Today, many people assume they are such spiritual giants. They abandon God’s design for learning the truth and they set themselves up as spiritual authorities. That is what brought about the multiplicity of perversions. That is also what brought about the multiplicity of denominational groups. There are still large meetings being held now where they use the world’s music and they promote immodesty. The teachers in these meetings might speak some truth, but it is mixed with much error. Most people lack discernment and they swallow up this type of stuff.
We need to look at the pattern God gave us here. Moses was chosen by God to be the human leader at the time we are looking at. God chose Aaron as the first high priest. Under that would be the priesthood. God gave Moses much instruction that he then needed to pass on to Aaron and the others. There were also the elders who would assist with the leadership of the nation. God did not give pieces to Moses and pieces to Aaron, etc. God designed it so that the people would get the Truth.
In the New Testament dispensation we are told in Ephesians 4:
Ephesians 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
You can read further in that passage and see God’s design. The devil also has a plan. He is intent on destroying the truth. The only way that anyone can avoid the devil’s lies and believe the truth is to be truly born again. The true born again child of God will be like Moses. Moses spent forty days and nights in the mount with God. He did not look at his watch or complain about being hungry. He took in all that God told him. He was careful to keep things organized so that he could teach things properly when he would be sent back to the people.
In Ephesians 4 we read of apostles and prophets. Those are today represented by the Scriptures. There are no living apostles or prophets today. Any religion that claims they have apostles and prophets is a false religion. Evangelists are what we often refer to as missionaries. The Bible never mentions missionaries. We also have pastors. There are many pastors who are chosen by people, but not by God. God has THE ONLY WAY of protecting us from false pastors/teachers. That way is by the indwelling Holy Spirit Who guides the saved person into truth through the Word of God.
From II Timothy 2:15 and elsewhere,
II Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Pride will keep many people from accepting God’s design of things. Those who want to promote themselves as teachers need to be mindful that God will hold us accountable for taking this very important position. Those who are truly chosen for this work by God need humility and need to be teachable. It will require work to understand God’s Word.
Moses was likely physically quite tired after the forty days in the mount with God. He was not lacking the ability to concentrate. God directed him and he was submissive to God’s leading. It is such an important fact to not just read God’s Word, but to meditate on what you read. Turn off the radio and the internet and think about what you read. Re-read it to be sure you are not allowing your own imagination to interfere with what you read. God’s Word is precious and It is true.
Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
