Exodus 30:22 Moreover the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
23 Take thou also unto thee principal spices, of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels, and of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty shekels,
24 And of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of oil olive an hin:
25 And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil.
26 And thou shalt anoint the tabernacle of the congregation therewith, and the ark of the testimony,
27 And the table and all his vessels, and the candlestick and his vessels, and the altar of incense,
28 And the altar of burnt offering with all his vessels, and the laver and his foot.
29 And thou shalt sanctify them, that they may be most holy: whatsoever toucheth them shall be holy.
30 And thou shalt anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister unto me in the priest’s office.
31 And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, This shall be an holy anointing oil unto me throughout your generations.
32 Upon man’s flesh shall it not be poured, neither shall ye make any other like it, after the composition of it: it is holy, and it shall be holy unto you.
33 Whosoever compoundeth any like it, or whosoever putteth any of it upon a stranger, shall even be cut off from his people.
As any born again Christian studies the Word of God, he or she will see the difference between Truth and false religion. The Holy Spirit indwells every true child of God. His purpose is to guide the true child of God into the Truth. The Truth is preserved in God’s Word. God’s Word IS Truth. The Holy Spirit does not ever endorse lies. He is God.
We have been looking at the detail that God gave Moses on the various aspects of the Tabernacle. The Tent itself needed to be constructed exactly the way God said. The materials needed to make the various parts of the Tabernacle needed to be gathered and prepared exactly the way God said. The vessels for use in the Tabernacle also needed to be made exactly as God said. The measurements needed to be correct. Certain parts were overlaid with gold. Others were made of brass.
God was giving Moses instructions for an object lesson that was to be part of the nation of Israel’s life until the coming of Christ. The problem was that it did not take that many years before the nation of Israel began to ignore the importance of the Tabernacle and Its vessels. The purpose of the sacrifices was also corrupted. Eventually God sent the nation into exile. This was after God directed king Solomon in the making of a more permanent structure — the Temple. That Temple was destroyed by the Babylonians. Some of the vessels of that Temple were taken captive by the Babylonians. Belshazzar tried to use some of those vessels in a drunken party. He tried to use them to honour his false gods. God said NO. God wrote on the wall and Belshazzar became extremely frightened. There was no one in his inner circle that could help him to know what was written on that wall.
The Queen mother knew of Daniel. Daniel was a faithful Jew who was taken captive by Nebuchadnezzar. Daniel never allowed himself to be defiled by the wicked religious life of the Babylonians. He was a very dear counsellor to Nebuchadnezzar. Not at first, but God showed the king just how important Daniel was to his survival and his government. Daniel was called upon to interpret the writing on that wall that fateful night. God had judged Belshazzar and found him wanting. He was so corrupt and so intent on being corrupt that God said He would take his life that very night. Not only that, but the kingdom of Babylon would collapse that very night and a new world power would take over.
Israel was without a Temple for over seventy years at that time. God directed Ezra to lead in the rebuilding of the Temple. That was the Temple that was in place at the time of Jesus Christ. Twice Jesus had to cleanse that Temple. The Jews had turned the Temple into a house of merchandise. It was supposed to be the house of God.
The house of God is not to be defiled by man. It is to be a place where people can come and meet with God. A place where people can come to learn Who this God is.
In our text today God again began by reminding us that He was speaking to Moses. This is God’s Word. He gave it to Moses for his benefit and for the benefit of the children of Israel. God preserved His Word so that it could be kept for our learning as well.
In these verses God laid out the specific instructions for the oil that was to be used in the Tabernacle. This oil was special. The recipe was not a secret. However, it was not to be used anywhere else but in the Tabernacle.
The ingredients for this oil were spelled out for Moses. The amount of spices needed was laid out exactly as required by God. We need to remember that these requirements were first given to the nation of Israel while they were wandering in the wilderness. Obviously there would be a way for the priests to find these spices and prepare them for this holy ointment. God never requires that which His children cannot do. He provides all that is needed to meet His holy standard.
God reminded Moses that the finished product would be a holy ointment. It would be used to anoint the tabernacle of the congregation and the ark of the testimony; the table and all the vessels for the table and the candlestick as well. It is interesting that God taught Moses that the table and the candlestick were of the masculine nature. We have already noted that all of these vessels were a type of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord Jesus Christ is a Man. He is not a woman or a thing. He is a male.
We read that the altar of burnt offering and all his vessels and the laver and his foot also needed to be sanctified. All of these items were to be most holy. They were made with materials that came from this earth, but because God assigned them for a special work for Himself, they were made holy. The priests needed to understand that their work was to God on behalf of the people. They dared not to play around with any of this. They dared not to be careless with the work they were called to do.
Aaron and his sons were also to be anointed with this holy ointment. This was not something that was designed for medicinal purposes. It was designed by God to remind the priests that they were called upon for a particular work and they needed to be presentable before a holy God. They were not holy on their own. They had no right to stand before a holy God on their own. They needed to be sanctified and all they did in that Tabernacle needed to be sanctified. It needed to be done for the glory of God.
In verse 31 we read that Moses needed to speak to the children of Israel and teach them of the importance of what the priests were doing. The instructions that God gave to Moses were to be followed throughout their generations. There would never be a time when they needed to be revised or upgraded. God’s ways are not outdated.
The sacrifices and the Tabernacle/Temple were done away with after the ascension of the Lord Jesus Christ. The material things had fulfilled their purpose. However, the teaching behind them was still important. Jesus Christ fulfilled the typology. Those who are saved through His finished work are still required to be sanctified. Those who are saved are still required to be holy. We are still worshipping a holy God and we need to glorify Him before a sinful world. Those who are truly saved are sinners saved by grace. Our worthiness is found in Christ. It is not in us.
In verse 32 we read that this special oil was not to be used on anyone else but the priests. The priests could not take it home and share it with others. This was a particular oil that was only to be used in the Tabernacle and only by the priests.
In verse 33 Moses was instructed that the recipe for this oil was not to be used by anyone else. Anyone who would get a hold of this recipe and make this oil/ointment and put it on a stranger, must be cut off from his people. Misuse of this ointment was strictly forbidden.
Misuse of the Lord Jesus Christ and the Work of the Holy Spirit is also strictly forbidden. The excesses of the Pentecostal/Charismatic movement is strictly forbidden by God. The false philosophies of that movement go further than just the slaying in the spirit and the speaking in tongues and the healing services, etc. The New Evangelical crowd has adopted aspects of that corrupt movement with their “worship teams” and with their mocking of God with their speeches.
True Christians need to warn others of the sin of corrupting what God has declared to be holy.
Many are playing around with things that God has given us. Many have corrupted what God gave and they are drawing many to their sideshows. They will be sorry one day. Those who are truly saved need to understand that we do not show love to these people by endorsing what they are doing or by being silent when we know what they are doing. We show love by speaking the truth and seeking to help others to repent and get saved.
Today is the Lord’s Day. God is so good to us. It is true that there are not that many good churches around. However, God has still made it possible for all people to hear and know the truth. God is still not willing that any should perish. He wants all to come to repentance. He has even made it possible to reach people through the airwaves that He created. The internet is a tool that can be used for good. Those who do not have access to a true local church can get on the internet and God will lead them to a true church if they are truly listening to God. Many people have been deceived into believing they are attending a good church even though what is taught is contrary to the Word of God.
God has given us precise instructions in His Word. We can know the way of salvation and we can know the fruit of true Biblical salvation. We can see the evidence of a truly born again Christian. The Bible tells us what that person will be like.
Be sure you take advantage of the opportunity granted to you today to be in a good church. Don’t waste another moment following deception. Honour God and know His peace and blessing today.
